FREDD HAAS: With surgery comes risk. There can be risk of post-surgical complication, infection, bleeding. A lot of times what happens is the procedure was done correctly. You then are the person who has one of these post-surgical risks and then, the risk is not discovered.
Oftentimes, the problem is not whether or not the risk occurred; it's the failure to recognize that the risk occurred. The responsibility for recognizing whether or not the risk occurred would be not only a responsibility for the physician, but a responsibility for other medical providers, such as the nurses.
Infections, another common risk of surgery. The infection, obviously, won't be there right after the surgery. It's something that comes on after. There are telltale signs of an infection. Those telltale signs have to be observed and document so treatment can be received.
Most surgeries go as planned. Most surgeries don't lead to complications. If your surgery led to a complication, you need to find out why. And then, you need to find out whether or not that complication could have been treated differently. And, if so, you may then not have had the problem you now have.
