FREDD HAAS: We often get asked how much do you charge or what is it going to cost me to hire an attorney. All of my clients pay me on what is called a contingency fee, or a percentage basis, meaning I only get paid if I win. In addition to the lawyer's time, there are the expenses associated with pursuing the case. Ethically, I have to tell you that it is your responsibility to pay the costs of your case. In most situations, we advance the costs and then those costs are paid out of the end of the recovery. A typical attorney's fee for personal injury work is one-third of the recovery. In addition to the one-third then, there would be the costs of the litigation that would have to be paid back to the attorney as well.
